To celebrate the 2010 Winter Olympics, our kindergarten students have been studying the geography and cultures of different countries around the world who participate in the olympics. These students made art projects representing different countries, they made food from different countries and they even studied flags of the world. Check out the photos of the kindergarten olympics!

In preparation for the olympics, some of our parents came to share with the students special things about their cultural traditions. Avinash's parents shared information about India. They discussed traditional clothes; the pottu or bindi (red dot worn commonly by women on the forehead; Kolam or rangoli (design drawings made in front of houses each morning); and the harvest festival called Pongai. They even made a sweet rice dish for the students to taste. Carlos's dad came to share information about a special martial arts practiced in Brazil. He talked with the students about the role that music plays in this activity and he brought some traditional instruments.
Mrs. Herbig gives the parent volunteers some olympic training, and then the teams take the field lead by Ms. Hirota's class.
Mr. Burkman lit the olympic flame! Let the games begin...the students practiced their measurement skills by participating in events like the high jump, the side step, the sponge squeeze, the mass challenge, the cotton ball throw and the paper plate discus.
At the closing ceremony, athletes from each country came up to receive a GOLD medal. Mr. Burkman extinguished the olympic flame to the sound of the olympic theme and the games were officially over.
