Ms. Hirota's Class
Ms. Hirota's class is learning all about life cycles.  They are watching caterpillars change into butterflies, they are observing tadpoles as they change into frogs and they are watching chicks develop in the incubator.  Check out what happens in just 21 kindergarten days!
Our incubator is set at 39 degrees Celsius.  We have been watching the temperature.  Now we place the eggs inside the incubator to keep the developing chick warm.  In just a few short hours, the chick will start to grow.  Within 21 hours from now the brain will begin to form, and the heart will begin beating in just 42 hours.  We are sooooo eggcited!
We are counting the days until our chicks hatch.  We mark each day on our chick calendar.  It sure does take a long time to get to 21 days!!  We are checking the temperature in the incubator every day too.  We don't want it to be too hot or too cold.  The temperature must be just right or our chicks might not be healthy.
Our chicks are developing something new everyday!  We are drawing pictures to document their development.  Some of our pictures indicate the parts developing outside the egg!  Some of us are sure the parts are developing inside the egg, but we don't know how the parts will go together.  Keep checking back to see what we discover as this process continues!
Our chicks have been growing in the incubator for 13 days!   With only 8 days left until they hatch, we decided to take a look inside the egg to see how things are going.  We constructed an egg candler out of a cardboard box.  There is a light inside the box and a small hole too.  When we put the egg on the hole, the light shined into the egg and we could see the chick inside.  It was incredible!  We could see the chick moving!
We are still drawing pictures to document the development of our chicks.  Today the chick collarbones fused to make the wishbones.  The chick also has ribs.   After candling the eggs, we are starting to realize that all these parts are connected to the body of the chick instead of just floating around in the egg! Watch the videos to see what we have to say about our eggs so far!  Double click on the 3 pictures below to play the videos.

Happy Birthday Chicks!
We finally made it to day 21 and our chicks are hatching!  The baby chicks stay in the incubator until they are dry and then we put them in the brooder.  The brooder has food and water and a big light that keeps the babies warm.
We learned so much by incubating and hatching eggs...we hope you learned something too!  PEEP PEEP
