County Government Excursion
Kalaheo Elementary School
To help the students gain a better understanding of how their classroom communities can function, we took the students to visit the Kauai County Council and the Mayor. They learned about how the two branches of government work together to run the county. At the council, we participated in a mock bill introduction complete with public testimony and council discussion. The students debated the issue of legalizing gum chewing in class. After some debate, an admendment to the bill was introduced (stating that the gum had to be sugar-free) and then the issue was sent back to committee for further discussion! Mayor Bernard Carvalho stressed the concept of working together as an essential part of his job. He also talked with the students about the improtance of being a good listener and he reminded students to have a "can do" attitude! We continued working Mayor Carvalho's themes of the day by participating in team building activities at the park. Check out our pictures.
