Ms. Silva and her 1st grade students are studying plant science, measurement, time and nutrition in a new way this year:  they have planted a class garden.  "This is a fun motivating way to teach the students science and math whild also teaching about ways to make our island more food self sufficient," says Ms. Silva.  The 1st graders working in the garden take the task very seriously.  "We get to use this spade," commented one students as she planted beans, cucumber, basil and baby bok choy.  1st grader, Luke, is excited to learn about seeds and growing food while Luke's friend, Aaron, is focused on "being good all day" so he can participate in the digging and planting!  Check out the great photos of these kids hard at work.
Ms. Silva and her 1st grade gardeners have what it takes to grow their own food and they are proving it!  These students have just completed their first November garden harvest.  They have more bok choy and beans than they can eat.  Some of the 1st grade herbivores are eating the garden vegetables raw and others prefer the green stuff in saimin.  These students also took bok choy home to share with their families.  Check out the pictures of the November harvest.
